It’s fascinating to think about how far multiplayer gaming has come. The first online game, called ‘MUD’ (Multi-User Dungeon), was created back in 1978. It laid the groundwork for so many aspects of today’s MMOs and competitive games, especially in terms of networking complexity and player interaction. Anyone else dive deep into MUD’s impact on gaming design?
It’s wild to think how MUD was like the first chat room but with swords; if you were to dive into a MUD now, would you be more of a wizard or a rogue?
MUD was such a game changer, but , it’s crazy how primitive it seems now! I can’t help but feel nostalgic about the creativity it encouraged. I’d probably go rogue too, but with how complex MMOs have become, it’d be a whole different experience.
MUD really set the stage for player narratives, but I think the limitations also inspired so much creativity — it forced players to use their imaginations in ways modern games often do for us… Have any of you tried a modern text-based game that captures that spirit?
