Crafting an Intuitive HUD

I’ve been working on the heads-up display for a new game and I’m struggling with how to balance essential information without cluttering the screen… It’s easy to overload players with details, but I want them to feel immersed rather than overwhelmed. How do you approach creating a clean, intuitive HUD that enhances gameplay without distracting from it?

One thing that worked for me was using a layered approach for critical info — like health or ammo — so it’s only visible when necessary, rather than always on-screen. Have you tried toggling HUD elements based on in-game actions? It can really streamline the experience.
